Eyelashes reaction to targeted therapy

What is it

In recent years, the advanced pharmaceutical industry has produced numerous biological drugs  (targeted oncology) capable of defeating the tumor by blocking certain cell receptors. Some of these are already marketed, while others will be soon. The names of the most used biological drugs are Cetuximab (Erbitux), Panitumumab (Vectibix), Gefitinib (Iressa), Erlotinib (Tarceva), Trastuzumab (Herceptin), Lapatinib (Tyverb).
The papulo-pustular reaction is the most common adverse skin reaction during treatment with EGFR inhibitors.
It occurs with the appearance of inflammatory papules or pustules at the level of hair follicles, especially in areas rich in sebaceous glands as the face and upper part of the trunk.
The same reaction can appear on the eyelashes and the eyebrow arch and in this case they cause specific problems.

What to do

The recommended treatment is to apply PEG BALM.
This absorbs the secretions and contributes to the detachment of the crust.
It should be applied on the external part and not on the conjunctiva.
To clean the eyelid, we recommend a solution of Potassium Permanganate.
